Paul, a middle-aged American living in emotional exile, comes to Paris when his estranged wife commits suicide. Chancing to meet a young Frenchwoman named Jeanne, Paul enters into a sadomasochistic, carnal relationship with her, indirectly attacking the hypocrisy all around him and his own feelings of guilt through his raw, outrageous sexual behaviour.

Film critic Pauline Kael gave what Roger Ebert once called the most famous movie review ever published, describing the film as having the same kind of hypnotic excitement as the Sacre, the same primitive force, and the same thrusting, jabbing eroticism. The movie breakthrough has finally come.

In Italy, the film was banned and all copies were ordered to be destroyed, and director Bertolucci received a four-month suspended prison sentence.
