The 40th anniversary edition ofNight of the Living Deadcomes equipped with some old special features and some new wrinkles. But first off, buyer beware: the endless copyright problems ofNOTLare still with us, and a public-domain version of the movie, also billing itself as the 40th anniversary edition, is floating around out there (the one you want has George Romero’s replica signature in silver at the bottom of the front cover). This new package contains some pre-existing features, including an intriguing audio interview with leading man Duane Jones, a somewhat tortured intellectual who sounds conflicted about his fame from the movie. Two commentary tracks allow Romero and other key collaborators to sound off about the film, and the original script is included as a DVD-ROM extra. A brief Q&A with Romero onstage at a festival is all right, but the real draw is a new feature-length documentary,One for the Fire, about the making ofNOTL. It’s got great anecdotes about the genesis of the project and the scrappy group of Pittsburghers who came together to make the world’s greatest zombie movie. There’s also info about the post-production goof that resulted in the film going out without a copyright attached–a detail that cost Romero and his backers millions.
